Summary of Performance of the Malaysian Palm Oil Industry 2009

Market Performance

The exports rising to 2.9% amid a weak global economy and environmental and sustainability issues associated with oil palm. However the earnings declined 24.0% to RM49.6 billion as the palm oil products traded on lower prices.

Plantation Performance

Total area plantation area increased 4.5% making up to 4.69 million hectares. Sabah has the largest plantation area of 1.36 million hectares making up 29% of total palm oil plantation area in the country. The largest increase in area for 2009 is Sarawak at 12.8% followed by  Peninsular Malaysia at 3.3% and Sabah 2.1%.
